Take a Hike: Great Treks Around Madison
It may seem that I have been home an awful long time especially compared to last fall through this spring when it seemed I was never home more than a few days at a time. But actually my travels have been truly Mad Travels — I’ve been right here around The Mad City since late May working on my next guidebook for Menasha Ridge Press: 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles of Madison. Menasha Ridge does a whole truckload of outdoors guides and I recently helped outdoor guru Johnny Molloy update the Best in Tent Camping Wisconsin which should be out any day now in bookstores.
My latest project aims to work off the extra 10 or 15 pounds I somehow acquired while researching the Wisconsin Beer Guide.
Some might think, Wait a minute – SIXTY hikes??? Are there really that many around Madison? I thought the same but now I am trying to get my list DOWN to 60! Much of the fascinating terrain is attributable to the retreating glaciers of the last ice age, but it is also quite clear that nature and the environment are top priorities around here. Hiking and biking trails abound just within the city itself, and the preserved wetlands, rivers, forests and a whole assortment of parks – plus our love for getting outside – make Madison a perfect destination to cover. I have all summer to get it done, but it’s already July. Soon I will be flying off to who knows where. Austin in a month. Panama perhaps in September. The rest is question marks, but rest assured I’ll be filling the passport again soon.
In the meantime, see you on the trails!
