Mad Traveler Photo Monday: Bali Sunrise

This week’s photo is a telephoto shot over the Bali Sea toward the nearby island of Lombok. We stayed in Eka Purnama Cottages on the eastern coast of Bali in the Amed area. In a cottage up on a cliff overlooking a cobblestone beach, we had been awakened by a racket below. It was the early morning fishermen taking their little outrigger sailboats out in the darkness, the heavy wood sliding across the clattering stones. As it got lighter we could see them in the distance, dozens upon dozens of them strung out along the horizon, their colored sails lit from behind by the rising sun. By the time everyone else was just starting to wake up, these folks were finishing up for the day.

  • A good photo for today as today is the day when the earth is as close to the sun as it can be in its orbit. Happy Perihelion Day to you!
