Travel Photo: Spider in Trinidad

trinidad-asa-wright

You know how when your headlights hit an animal at night their eyes glow? Yeah, not cool when it’s a spider.

On a hike through the rain forest on a trip to Trinidad and Tobago, I found this not-so-little fellow hiding — inside the hand rail on some steps. Be careful where you grab. The canopy was thick enough at mid-day (plus it was overcast) to require a flash as if it were nighttime. This trail is part of the Asa Wright Nature Centre, the oldest such center in the West Indies, having been founded as a non-profit in 1967 to reclaim and protect this region of the Northern Range on Trinidad. The center is high up in the hills overlooking valleys rich with forest. This place really draws the birds and thus is a mecca for birders.
