Dan Wakefield, one of Vonnegut’s old friends and a fellow Indianapolis native, put together this little collection of some of Vonnegut’s commencement addresses. Full of Vonnegut’s wit and wisdom and all the quirkiness of his style and his philosophy in the last two decades of his life. Vonnegut fans will hear his voice in their heads; newbies will want to start reading his books. Some may call him a pessimist, but his somewhat gloomy views of our future, our war habits, and much more, are always balanced against his belief we can all do some good and the importance for us to stick together and appreciate the simple joys of life, love, and learning. And the uselessness of a semi-colon.

A cantankerous collector of birds for a New York museum and the story of his life and two true loves. Flashes back and forth between World War II in the South Pacific and the present for him in the early 1970s having just lost part of his leg to illness. It’s a fascinating read both for the war story and bird skinning elements, but also for the look back on a life and deciding the merits of having lived it or even to keep living it.
