Pub Street in Siem Reap – Cambodia

In Siem Reap when you’re not out at the Angkor temples, the place to hang is Pub Street. Fifty cent beers, delicious food (both Western and Khmer) even a decent wood-fired oven pizza if you can believe it at El Tigre de Papier. I liked the sassy service at Khmer Family Restaurant. Food was delicious, and I had lok lak, a nice local beef dish. The hostess accosted us at the menu posted on the curb. “You have a look. Come in, sit down. You should eat here.” It was reminiscent of the postcard kids at the temples but she was a bit humorous. “Sit upstair and mosquito no bite you. Maybe I bite you, but mosquito no bite you.”

We couldn’t resist the buy-one-get-two drink specials and settled in for a few. I looked up warily at the message board that read Buy 2 get 1 free and wondered if we were going to lose an argument about who said what. To be safe I asked the waiter. He looked over his shoulder at the board and turned back with a distasteful look on his face, as though some jester had written the specials wrong just to annoy him. “It’s happy hour. I make a change.” He smiled.

This little piggy is going to market. Peung has reservations about ever eating pork again.
