New Belgium Brewing’s Traveling Film Festival

If you’re lucky, your hometown is on the short list of 18 communities being visited by New Belgium Brewing Co.’s beer and film tour, Clips of Faith.

Madison was a lucky candidate on June 21 and we headed out to Olin Park (site of the most awesome Great Taste of the Midwest beer fest in August). New Belgium had set up a bunch of booths serving their beer, some unusual brews such as Cocoa Molé, La Folie Sour Brown Ale, Tart Lychee, as well as more familiar brews like Fat Tire and Ranger IPA. The event was a fundraiser for the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin and an opportunity for fans to sample new varieties and old favorites, and for non-fans to become fans.

We bought $1.50 tokens, each good for one 3-oz. beer (or 4 for a full-size glass). (Personal favorite was Cocoa Molé.) We received little passports to keep track of what we were tasting and read detailed descriptions of them.

All well and fine, great beer and great weather in a park that overlooks Lake Monona and our lovely Capitol view. But that was just part of the show. New Belgium brings along an inflatable movie screen and the crowd flops in front of it on blankets to see two sets worth of great short video clips. None more than a few minutes long. There wasn’t a dud in the bunch. So this event works whether you are there for the beer or the films – two of my favorite things, actually.

I managed to find one of my favorite clips from the fest on Vimeo. The cinematography is fabulous, the skiing kicks ass, and even the song won me over. It’s a bit of urban skiing (yeah, you read that right) by JP Auclair.

This is from a longer work (70 min.) by Sherpa Cinema and is available on Amazon: Sherpas Cinema presents All I Can Ski Video 2012

So check that list and see if you are close to where New Belgium is coming this year, and head out for some great cinema and suds.

  • This is awesome! I wish they can visit in Queensland too. A movie plus a beer will surely result a great day for me and my friends. Looking forward … 🙂
