A Little Slice of Foodie Heaven – the delicious delights of the Lake District

The UK isn’t renowned for its culinary history, generally being more the butt of jokes, but the English food scene is having a renaissance and local produce is taking centre stage. From big cities to small villages, amazing new cafes and restaurants are popping up every day, giving visitors a chance to taste English food at its best.

The Lake District, in the north west of England, has some of the best local food producers in the country and despite it being a tourist hotspot, there are still some great food bargains to be had. From light and fresh lunches, to sticky sweet desserts, there is something to suit every taste and budget in the Lake District.

Baba Ganoush – Kendal

If you’re looking for a fresh and delicious lunch while out and about in the Lake District then the Baba Ganoush Food Shop and Canteen in Kendal is the place to be. The laid back vibe of the cafe is reflected in the food, focussing on fresh ingredients and seasonal produce. One of the owners is a lifelong vegetarian so the menu is varied – you’ll find everything from slow roasted meat dishes, vegetarian mezze platters, and delicious homemade desserts.

Enjoy your meal at one of the cafes tables, or stock up at their food shop and bring everything back to your holiday cottage in the Lake District and savour the delights all afternoon.

Cartmel Village Shop – Cartmel

Those with a sweet tooth beware; the puddings on offer at the Cartmel Village Shop will haunt you for the rest of your life. The Village Shop offers more than just dessert though; here you’ll find a great selection in the deli and delicious sandwiches and coffee in the cafe.

Hawkshead Brewery – Staveley

The team at the Hawkshead Brewery has been brewing traditional beer in the Lake District since 2002 and has been serving food in their beer hall since 2010. Specializing in what they call ‘beer tapas’, offering 12-14 dishes at any given time to perfectly complement their beer. If you’re feeling a bit more peckish then you can choose from a number of full main courses, including the hefty Brewer’s Lunch which is sure to satiate even the most famished of diners.

Not only is the food and beer on offer of the highest quality, but the setting is also beautiful – offering views outside and through to the brew house. Local musicians are regularly featured in the Beer Hall as well, giving you the perfect excuse to just sit back and relax for hours.
