Like Art Camp for a Day: Door County’s Hands On Art

Be prepared to be creative: how about a vacation destination where you can make your own art? I know people are going to say, “Hey, that’d be great for my kids!” And it’s true; this farm-cum-art-studio is ideal for kids. Lots of hands-on arts and crafts projects, a load of animals to feed and pet (goats, horses, llamas) and even a build your own sandwich cafe. Kids will love it, parents will love that their kids love it. But let’s talk about ME for a minute here! When was the last time you fellow adult types out there had an art class? Made a gruesome, clay ashtray even though your parents didn’t smoke? Got so much glue on your hands you essentially had a new pair of gloves? Well for me it has been way too long!

Here’s how this place works. Choose what you want to do: glass fusing, ceramic painting, pottery throwing, mosaic tiling, metal working, etc. You pay a studio fee of $7 for the entire day. Then you pay for your project. If you are going to make a mosaic picture frame, it might be $15 or $25 for example. You can use all the mosaic tiles and grout you need for the frame and you still pay the frame fee and just $7. Take all the time you need. Come back tomorrow and it’s just another $7 to continue where you left off. Much of the stuff is done in The Barn, but a glass studio and metal studio are in separate buildings. There are over 6,000 square feet of studio space here. Each area is staffed by someone knowledgeable in that particular art and can help you get started.

There are weekly adult nights for those of you afraid that that kid next to you who already had pottery with Mrs. Williams last year in 2nd grade is going to laugh at you. Hands On is open year-round; so unlike some Door County businesses that roll up the sails for the winter season, this one battens down the hatches and keeps sailing (with different hours, of course, but still).

Go get a little art on your hands at Hands On Art. This is a really good way of finding a souvenir from your trip to Door County. And it’s not just the kids who will love it.
