Hotel Review: Jordan Tower Hotel

Jordan Tower Hotel (not to be confused with Arab Tower Hotel) is an ideal place for the backpacker traveler staying in Amman. Jordan Tower Hotel is just across the street from the Roman Theater and you can see the Citadel on the rocky bluff above (walkable but a pretty good climb).

This is definitely a hostel with the usual social crowd hanging about in the lounge all day and guests making new travel buddies or going on day trips together.

There are three floors of rooms including dormitory style and single, double, triple with shared baths, as well as rooms with private bath. There is air-conditioning, and sheets and towels are provided. Traffic noise might be an issue for some – the Jordanians love to use their horns and this hotel is located at the point of a busy triangular block.

The showers are in the toilets at either end of the floor so you can expect wet floors much of the time, especially in the mornings, but staff appears to clean them daily and carefully.

While not many guests seemed interested in the rooftop terrace, it does offer a nice view of the neighborhood. This is a view from a room on the 3rd floor:

Management is very accommodating and has great information for the travelers. They also arrange tours, drivers, and airport transfers. These are great because you can easily find someone to split the ride to the airport (usually 20JD unless in the wee hours when it is 30JD for the whole car.) Tours are reasonably priced and so you can get to the Dead Sea, Jaresh, the Israeli border, or even Petra for an honest fixed price from drivers and guides who have worked with the hotel before. (We were very pleased with our drivers.)

WiFi only works in the lobby. The radio is usually on or the cable TV there. A couple couches and a shared book library make it a nice hangout, and dining tables can fill up fast for breakfast.

Breakfast is included. You can choose from a couple Western style meals such as an omelet or with beans, and my personal favorite, an Arabic option. The latter comes with hummus, labaneh, olives, two types of bread, tea or coffee, a slice of lunch meat, cheese, and jam. The kicker for me is that you can get more of whatever you want (though the initial offering is generally plenty!)

Laundry service is onsite. Jordan Tower Hotel does NOT allow alcohol on the premises and there is no smoking either.

Rainbow Street is a fifteen-minute walk-climb, the outstanding hummus restaurant Hashim is much closer, as are many other nice local eateries and cafes. The northern bus station is about 5JD and 10-15 minutes depending on traffic. The JETT bus station is about the same but you’ll have to haggle hard with the taxi drivers. This really is a great hostel in Amman and the helpful staff and proximity of the best parts of the city make it my first choice.
